Get ready for some words because there's a lot more than just fun facts in this one. At least until I can actually make like...a giant infodump post about how Sbalioverse™ Magic and shit works.

Staff
A Staff is like a huge sledgehammer, but for magic. It's the largest potential vessel for casting, but also the most generally limited. While staves can be wielded with one hand, using two hands when casting allows for greater and faster channeling of power, and staves are the only vessel large enough to store all that magic and channel it all into a single spell. Max could still use a free hand, but much like swinging a sledgehammer with one hand, it would ultimately be a waste of energy. Using a staff as a vessel allows for massive power in spellcasting both offensively and defensively, and even allows for the user to control how much of their power is spent on a spell, and how much is stored for later use. The size of the staff allows a temporary storage of power that can amount to a single spell being cast with up to 10x its expected strength, depending on the amount of magic stored. Storing magic obviously comes at the cost of current spell casts losing their own output strength. 

Conduits
Conduits are essentially enchanted items that act as energy tanks for extra mana. It isn't the size or shape of the conduit that influence exactly how much mana it can store, but the quality of the material(s). In Max's case, the gem in her choker is not only rare and valuable, but also exceptionally crafted by the master conduit craftsmen of her original home. It can hold nearly as much spare energy as a Mana Soul. Her piercings and bracelet are far more common, and together still do not meet the same potential as her choker. Conduits are not consumed or destroyed if they are completely emptied, and will need to be in either very close proximity to their user, or directly on their person. They also have no effect on Mana Souls, and can only be utilized by the host when in standard form, due to being linked to the user's true soul.

Anthromorphia
Max has also followed the ancient school of anthromorphia as a means of mana production and retention. While an outdated and widely considered obsolete field of study, the transformation into a subhuman form essentially allows an additional soul, crafted entirely of mana, to manifest itself into the host. Much like a conduit, this extra soul collects and stores excess mana from the host when not in use (a full charge will typically take 48 hours), but unlike conduits, Mana Souls can hold as much mana as the true soul, if not even more. The user can essentially double, or even triple their power by transforming into the new form, or use the extra form once they've depleted their other resources. 

Anthromorphists can choose the characteristics of their mana souls upon creation, and even give them separate clothing or an entirely different form altogether. A Mana Soul cannot be human, as two human souls cannot be contained in a single physical body, so they must be inhuman enough to be maintained without essentially Zero-Summing and destroying the original soul. While most anthromorphists will only craft a single mana soul for themselves, the most skillful ones can craft multiple, though it's widely believed that the splitting of one's soul into too many separate mana souls can utterly dismantle the host's sanity. Mana Souls can be "erased" and removed, but only through a difficult and exhausting synergization ritual that will typically leave the host weakened or even powerless (outside of conduits) for several days. Even then, the largest risk to anthromorphic transformation is separation. If an anthromorphist is in combat and fails to revert to their host form (or another mana form) when the mana soul is weakened, depleted, or too far damaged, they run the risk of being separated. 

If a mana soul is destroyed through any means other than synergization, and the host has no other mana souls (or other forms) to change to, both the host soul and the mana soul will still be sharing the host body, and thus the destruction of the mana soul will take most, if not all, of the host soul with it. The host will lose mana production altogether and no longer have access to magic, but they can also lose their personality, their emotions, their memories; they could either die or wind up as an empty, nearly soulless husk of a person. The damage of separation is unpredictable, and that and the other risks associated with Anthromorphia have led to more modern means of power production and storage, such as conduits. 

That said, a Mana Soul Master can be a terrifying force of power and potential immortality. Some have managed to survive centuries after death by leaving their aged (and essentially dead) host form behind and cycling between their several mana souls, using one form's mana supply to continue living while the other forms recharge. Although, that doesn't necessarily mean they're sane, or have even retained their humanity.
